STOP THE TRAFFIK Australia has launched a major report in Canberra outlining steps the government needs to take to deal with the use of slavery in the production of goods imported into Australia.
“There is a serious possibility that more than $600 million worth of goods imported into Australia last year were at risk of involving forced labour or the exploitation of children in their production,” one of the authors of the report Dr Mark Zirnsak said. “It’s time the Government steps up and requires companies to ensure goods sold to Australians are free of slavery.”

Report of survey undertaken in August 2011 of the experience of those under 16 years of age who study and undertake paid employment
The Justice and International Mission Unit of the Uniting Church in Australia, Synod of Victoria and Tasmania believes that basic human and labour rights should be in place for all children who work.
To inform our work in this area further, the Unit developed a survey for Tasmanian children under 16 years of age undertaking paid work at the same time as undertaking education. The survey attracted 47 respondents, and raised some alarming findings amongst those that did respond.
Unfortunately there are only limited legal protections in place in Tasmania to protect children in employment when compared to other States.
