Schoolies for Our Global Community (Indonesia) begins with the shared welcome lunch for all schoolies, and a 1.5 day briefing in Melbourne. At the briefing you will learn what to expect from your schoolies, and also what's going on with the other programs. By the end of it you'll be a little bit nervous and pretty darn excited and ready to board that plane to Yogyakarta, Indonesia.

After a relaxing evening in Yogyakarta, where you can get recharged, you'll be off into regional Central Java to the first host community: Salatiga. In Salatiga you will stay in local homes with families and learn about regional Javanese life. Walks through rice paddies and wandering through tiny villages will help you get your bearings and start to get a feel for Indonesia and its friendly people. In Salatiga you can choose to help out in an orphanage, work with rice farmers and/or assist a local non-profit with their grassroots community work.

After Salatiga we will head to Solo - a cultural capital of Java, to visit a Buddhist community and have a bit of fun in the famous batik markets. From there to Bantul regency, a poor area full of tiny villages just south of Yogyakarta city.

There you will experience the life of a rural Indonesian teenager - stay in an Islamic boarding school where beds are a non-existent luxury, as is running water, and walk in the footsteps of the village's inhabitants. Here you may choose to help out with current building projects or teach new games to students at the school. This bit is always a highlight of the trip - you'll know what we mean. An afternoon trip from here can take you to a Hindu community close by, where you will be welcome to participate in rituals and to nongkrong (hang out) with the locals.

From Bantul we'll take you back to Yogyakarta city (where you will once again get a bed!) and finish the trip with some relaxation and quick souvenir shopping.
Then back on a plane, back to Melbourne and to the debrief for some sleep. Debriefing will allow you to talk about what you've learned, and to work out practical avenues for your newly found enthusiasm. Lots of talking, lots of sharing, lots of fun. After Sunday lunch you will officially no longer be a schoolie, and will be set to go and save the world!
